How to Identify Vintage Buttons: Materials, Backmarks & Eras

Sterling Buttons·July 17, 2026

Vintage buttons are small artefacts — each one records the materials, machines and taste of its decade. Whether you’re dating grandmother’s button tin or evaluating a flea-market find, here’s what the experts look at.

Start with the back

The back tells more truth than the front. Soldered or looped metal shanks suggest older manufacture; moulded self-shanks arrived with post-war plastics. Backmarks — maker names or country stamps like “France” — date pieces quickly, since marking conventions changed by era.

Know your materials by decade

Real mother of pearl dominated shirts until mid-century. Bakelite and casein carried the 1930s–40s. Nylon and ABS plastics took over from the 1960s, and the 1970s–90s — the heart of our archive — perfected die-cast metal buttons with plated antique finishes: the crests, deco revivals and figurals collectors hunt today.

Motifs date themselves

Heraldic crests boom in every trad-revival decade. Novelty shapes — strawberries, smileys, cartoon animals — mark the playful 70s and 80s. Ornate filigree and “antiqued” gold speak to the 80s’ love of old-world looks.

Why deadstock matters

A worn vintage button carries damage; a deadstock vintage button carries only age. Unused factory overstock — matched sets, uncut cards, original finishes — is the collector’s ideal and the sewist’s safe choice, and it’s what the Sterling archive is built from.

Building a collection

Collect by theme (figurals, one material, one era) rather than volume. Matched sets in original condition appreciate; single worn commons don’t. And handle everything — weight and surface teach faster than photographs.

Can’t find the button you need? Our Button Finding Service searches thousands of unlisted archive styles — send a photo and rough size and we usually reply within one business day.

Frequently asked

How can I tell if a button is vintage?

Look at construction and material: metal shanks soldered rather than moulded, materials like real mother of pearl or early nylons, dies and motifs no longer produced, and matched sets on original cards are all strong signs.

What are vintage buttons worth?

Common vintage sets trade at $2–4 per button; rare figurals, quality metals and unusual dies command more. Condition and complete matched sets raise value significantly.

What is deadstock?

Unused old inventory — buttons manufactured decades ago that were never sold or sewn. Deadstock combines vintage design with new condition, which is why collectors and sewists prize it.

Does Sterling Buttons sell genuine vintage?

Yes — the archive is largely 1970s–90s deadstock from closed factories and mills, held since our years as a manufacturer and importer. Unused, matched, and finite.
